About this cabinet

  • dimensions: L 82 cm x D 42 cm x H 69 cm
  • teak
  • unpainted
  • age: early 1900s
  • origin: north-west of the state of Gujarat, Kutch district

These cabinets originally come from the far north-west of the state of Gujarat, from the Kutch district. They were also sometimes given as a dowry, दहेज (dahej).

The area where the Rabari tribe live is the largest salt desert in the world. Damchiyas used to be made on tall legs because the area is often exposed to the surging tides of the Arabian Sea and heavy rain during the summer monsoon.

They come in different versions with intricate geometric carved patterns, iron fittings, little mirrors or horse heads, but almost always with a single door in the middle. Or you may see them beautifully painted.

But what applies to this damchiya is: “less is more”.
